Bjork´s article in Times needs correction

04.11.2008

Misunderstanding in an article by singer Bjork published in The Times on 28 october 2008 needs correction according to Jon Steindor Valdimarsson Director General of the Federation of Industries in Iceland. The online edition of The Times has published his letter.

The singer criticizes the government and claims it is destroying Icelandic nature. She claims rules on environmental assessment are in danger of being ignored in shelter of the financial crisis to build two new aluminium smelters in Iceland.

Mr Valdimarsson points out that Icelanders have over half a century experience using sustainable energy. With the collapse of the banking system in Iceland, sensible and sustainable use of this energy; „has become even more important than before.“ Mr Valdimarsson also points out that aluminium production in Iceland is far more environmentally friendly than in most other countries because of these resources.

A short version of the letter was published on the Times website, the letter in whole is accessible here.
